How to wire and use the encoder with switch

A switchable encoder, also known as a rotary encoder or a patch encoder, is essentially the same product, but with different names. The editor learned that this type of encoder with a switch is widely used in current applications. So, do everyone have a comprehensive understanding of encoders with switches? How to connect the encoder with a switch? What precautions should be taken when using it? If you are not a technical personnel, I think most people are probably not familiar with this. I have previously explained to you about the factors that are easily overlooked in the operation of encoder with switch. Now, let me explain how to connect and use the encoder with switch.

Working principle of encoder with switch

When the encoder shaft with a switch (incremental) rotates, there will be a corresponding pulse signal output, which can determine the direction of rotation of the encoder by increasing or decreasing the number of pulses, and needs to be implemented with the help of the direction determining circuit and counter at the rear. The counting starting point of the encoder can be set arbitrarily, and it can also achieve infinite accumulation and measurement of multiple cycles. By emitting a pulse of Z signal for each revolution, a pulse signal will be output as the reference mechanical zero position. Therefore, when the pulse signal is fixed, to improve the accuracy of the encoder resolution, the operation method can use the two signals A and B with a 90 degree phase difference to operate, which is to multiply the original pulse number.

Wiring method for encoder with switch

Generally, encoders with switches have five pin terminals. The first three pin terminals are the A, B, and Z three-phase pulse output lines, and the other two are the COM terminal line and the power line. The wiring method of its encoder is to first connect the power supply terminal (negative pole) to the COM terminal of the encoder, and then connect the power supply terminal (positive pole) to the power supply terminal of the encoder. Then connect the COM terminal of the encoder to the input COM terminal of the PLC, and connect the A, B, and Z three-phase pulse output lines of the first three pin terminals to the input terminal of the PLC.

Instructions for using encoder with switch

Note 1

When installing encoders with switches, do not push them in too hard to avoid damaging the shaft system and encoder. The encoder should be gently pushed into the sleeve shaft.

Note 2

For each use of the encoder, it is necessary to regularly check whether the plate spring is loose relative to the encoder, and whether the screws of the encoder are loose. To avoid any malfunctions or accidents during operation.

Note 3

Do not connect the wiring terminals between encoders with switches incorrectly, otherwise it may cause damage to the encoder during power on operation.

Note 4

For the use of encoders, attention should be paid to areas with high environmental temperature and humidity, otherwise some internal components of the encoder may be susceptible to moisture and cause failure.

Note 5

Never connect the signal line of an encoder with a switch to a DC power line to avoid damaging the output circuit of the encoder. Remember this point in this operation.

Note 6

Encoder is a relatively precise instrument, and when using it, attention should be paid to whether there are vibration sources and interference sources in the surrounding environment, otherwise it will have a significant impact on the operation of the encoder.
